• Short Summary

A documentary about Winston Churchill as a painter.

  • Description

Credits inform us that this documentary is based on the book "Painting as a Pastime" by Winston S. Churchill. The documentary is narrated by Paul Scofield, directed by Lou Stoumen and produced by Jack Le Vien.

Reel 1 contains footage of Winston Churchill painting, friends talking about his work, a retrospective of Churchill's work as a politician and as First Lord of the Admiralty, cartoon images of Churchill and painted portraits, first world war footage (some looks like feature film footage), nice C/Us of paint being mixed on a palette and paint being applied to a canvas.

Reconstruction of moment in Churchill's life when he started painting and Lady Lavery advised him to be brave rather than timid about slapping colour on the canvas.
