  • Description

During the past week, British Royal Marine Commandos and other British servicemen have been rehearsing in Madison Square Gardens, New York, for Britain's Military Tournament and Tattoo which opens there June 17 for a month-long run.

The show includes some spectacular scaling of rope-ladder obstacles, and the striking rope descent in which marines slide down at high speed from the roof along a taut rope - smoke pouring from the rope as they rush earthwards. Symbolic of British phlegm, a British officer watches the descent sporting the old-fashioned monocle.

More gymnastics - men leaping over a high vaulting horse from both sides simultaneously, and then an attractive stunt as a team springboard over one vault, land on another spring device, and bounce high over a second vault.

Described as Britain's biggest invasion of the US in 150 years, the tournament is the second big British show in New York this month, beginning soon after the British industrial exhibition, recently opened by the Duke of Edinburgh.
