  • Description

Police and students clashed in Rome on Monday as hundreds of students took to the streets in defiance of an official ban on their protest march.

SYNOPSIS: Police ran through clouds of tear gas to break up the banned march. The students had called the protest after the courts had threatened to banish about 10 students to isolated areas after being convicted of fomenting disorder. It's a system started by the Fascists....and now usually reserved for Mafia leaders. But the march was banned....police moved in to break it up....and that's when rioting broke out.

The students' reply to the police's tear gas grenades was to throw petrol bombs....and as more police arrived....one of the petrol bombs burst on top of police vehicle. In spite of the intensity of the clashes, only one person was reported injured....a policeman, dragged to safety by his colleagues. And he was later said to be not badly hurt.

More police called in had to cope with tear gas mingling with smoke from cars set ablaze by the rioting students, who'd also managed to block some roads with overturned vehicles.

At one stage, police had to clear passengers off a bus when students tried to set fire to it.

The fire on the bus, however, did not take hold, and it only needed an officer with a small hand extinguisher to put it out. There was no indication by police later how many arrests they'd made.
