  • Description

The international Greenpeace marchers, who have carried their protests against French nuclear tests through several European countries, came to an abrupt halt today (Saturday, May 26th) -- their progress blocked by a line of French gendarmes.

About a hundred French police had been drafted to the border village of Wattrelos to prevent the sixty marchers from ten nations crossing into France from Belgium. The marchers promptly sat down int he no-man's land of the frontier in protest.

Later, it was reported that the gendarmes waded into them, kicking and clubbing, when they crossed into the French sector. The demonstrators scuttled back to the shelter of the Belgian side of the border, but said they would regroup the following day for another attempt to cross into France.

About 200 young French people supporting the Greenpeace march demonstrated on the French side of the border. The international marchers are hoping to be in Paris next Saturday for a rally climaxing their protests against the French nuclear tests in the Pacific.
