  • Description

Italian police are still not sure who was responsible for Sunday's (4 August) bomb outrage which left 12 dead and initiated a protest nationwide strike on Monday (5 August).

A message purporting to have come from the fascist guerrilla group Black Order has claimed responsibility for the blast on the Rome - Munich express. Police are not sure if the message is genuine.

Millions of Italian workers downed tools on Monday during a half-day general strike to protest against the bombing which also injured 48.

The stoppage was called by the three main trade union confederations, as police investigations spread across the country.

Italy has been plagued by political violence for the past five years, with hundreds of bomb attacks that have claimed 69 lives and injured 430 people.

    Monday's stoppage passed off peacefully.

However, in Parliament, representatives of Left and Right clashed bitterly over who should bear responsibility for the massacre.

Members of the extreme right-wing Italian Social Movement (M.S.I.) rejected suggestions that fascists were responsible for the bombing.

M.S.I. Secretary Giorgio Almirante said he went to the head of Italy's newly-formed Anti-Terrorist Squad last month warning him of leftist plans for a train attack.

Police believe the bomb was placed on the Munich-bound express at Rome Station where the carriage stood empty and deserted for several hours. The explosion took place as the train sped through one of Europe's longest tunnels between Florence and Bologna setting fire to a number of carriages.
