The new president of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has made his first address to the Nigerian Assembly. He was sworn in as President on the first of October, after which the head of the military government, Major General Olusegun Obasanjo, retired.
SYNOPSIS: There has been a smooth transition from military rule to the new civilian administration. But the composition of the House of Representative following the elections did not assure outright support for President Shagari. His Nigerian National Party has only 168 seats in the 449 member House, and 36 in the 95-member senate. The President inspected a guard before addressing the joint session.
In his speech President Shagari called for national unity, and pledged support for black nationalists in Southern Africa.
President Shagari's first address to the elected representatives of Nigeria drew prolonged applause.
