  • Description

The 15-nation North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) countries have been holding a series of meetings at the Organisation's headquarters in Brussels.

The latest -- and most important -- of these is the current series of meetings between the 15 NATO Foreign Ministers.

At the end of Thursday's (12 December) session United States' Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger told the meeting that a confrontation with oil-producing nations could only be disastrous for Western Europe and for Japan.

The world economic crisis -- prompted by spiralling oil prices -- was the major pre-occupation for the Foreign Ministers as they started their two-day winter Council session.

Dr. Kissinger told the top-secret meeting that nobody had yet found a way to solve the twin problems of inflation had unemployment. It was therefore essential for western nations to maintain the closest possible contacts to combat "stagflation".

The impact of the West's economic crisis on the NATO alliance -- celebrating its 25th anniversary this year -- has been the recurring theme of a series of ministerial meetings at Alliance headquarters this week.
