  • Description

    Five minutes from the
end of this amazing match Preston's master footballer Tom Finney cracked in a
penalty equaliser to crown England's most courageous game.

For the first 65 minutes the superbly drilled Russians almost ground England
(wearing white shirts, black shorts) into the turf of this beautiful new Ullevi
Stadium, Gothenburg. England could match them neither for ideas nor for pace. At
times there was too much strength from the Russians, which referee Zsolt was
quick to pounce on. Just before the interval, after a vicious foul by left-half
Victor Tsarov on Tom Finney, the referee called over centre forward skipper
Simonyan and warned 'one more foul like that and Tsarov goes off'.

For the first half of the game, then, the English players were hopelessly city
classed and outrun. But when the rally came, after a scintillating head shot by
Derek Kevan, England roared into the fight. But for Robson missing a sitter, the
result might well have been a victory for England.

The final score: England 2 (Kovan, Finney) Russia 2 (Simonyan, Ivanov)
