Background: The Syrian embassies in Rome and Islamabad were attacked on Monday (11 October) by Palestinian gunmen protesting against Syrian involvement in Lebanon. Pakistani security guards shot dead on the three youths who had forced their way into the Islamabad embassy, tossing a hand grenade.

In Rome, three Palestinians burst into the Syrian embassy armed with machine guns and hand grenades. They surrendered to police 90 minutes later. Police said the raid appeared to be an attempt to take ambassador Farouk Al Shara hostage. However, the ambassador was out. The young Palestinians called themselves commandos of the "Black June Movement". Syrian troops entered Lebanon last June. The Palestine Liberation Organisation's office in Rome issued a statement condemning the raid as "a terrorist action" which could harm the Lebanese ceasefire talks."
The commandos said the Black June movement was an Iraqi-based group which claimed responsibility for an attack on an hotel in Damascus last month. Four hostages were killed in the attack and three of the attackers were hanged outside the hotel the following day. The leader of the assault group told newsmen the action in Rome was aimed at drawing public attention to the fate of the Palestinian people in Lebanon and their "extermination" by Syrian forces. Eye-witnesses of the Islamabad radio reported seven people, including three police, wounded in the shooting. The two commandos not killed there were arrested.
