    THE PRESIDENT OF TANZANIA, DR. JULIUS NYERERE, HAS FORMALLY LAUNCHED A WEEK OF CELEBRATIONS IN DAR ES SALAAM, MARKING THE 14TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS RULING TANGANYIKA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (TANU) PARTY.

    DRUMMERS, DANCERS AND A CROWD OF SEVERAL THOUSANDS THRONGED THE TANU HEADQUARTERS TO SEE HIM OPEN AN EXHIBITION DEPICTING THE PARTY'S HISTORY SINCE JULY 7, 1954
    SEVERAL ITEMS FROM THE TANU EXHIBITION WERE HOISTED ALOFT BY AN OFFICIAL FOR THE CROWD TO SEE - A RICKETY TABLE AND A FOLDING CHAIR USED BY DR. NYERERE IN THE EARLY DAYS OF THE PARTY. ALSO DISPLAYED WAS HIS BRITISH PASSPORT, CANCELLED BY THE BRITISH AUTHORITIES IN 1957.

    DR. NYERERE SAID THE CHAIR LOOKED RATHER NEW. THE OFFICIAL AGREED -- AND ADMITTED THERE HAD BEEN SOME ALTERATIONS.

    DURING THE OPENING CEREMONIES THERE WAS A MINUTE'S SILENCE IN MEMORY OF THE "MARTYRS WHO FELL IN THE LIBERATION STRUGGLES TO FREE TANZANIA FORM ARAB ENSLAVEMENT, GERMAN OPPRESSION, BRITISH COLONIALISM AND EXPLOITATION."
    THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS ALSO ATTENDED BY THE FIRST VICE PRESIDENT, SHEIKH ABEID KARUME AND THE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT. MR. KAWAWA.

    THE ANNIVERSARY IS BEING HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH SABA SABA (SEVENTY DAY OF THE 7TH MONTH FESTIVAL.)
    HIGH LIGHT OF THE CELEBRATIONS WILL B ON JULY 7 AND WILL INCLUDE A GUARD OF HONOUR MOUNTED BY POLICE, A MASS PROCESSION AND A RALLY.
