  • Description

"SHE" IS THE INTRIGUING NAME GIVEN TO THE FASHION SHOW THAT WAS RECENTLY JULY 27, 1959 HELD IN CEYLON, THE ISLAND STATE SOUTH OF INDIA, DESCRIBED AS THE PEARL.

THOUGH CEYLON IS BUDDHIST AND HINDU, THE WESTERN INFLUENCE IS STILL TO AS FOUND IN THE DRESSES AND NAMES OF A GOOD SIZE OF THE CEYLONESE COMMUNITY.

ARRANGED IN AID OF NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR CHILD AND YOUTH WELFARE, THE FASHION SHOW DISPLAYED THE CREATIONS OF CEYLONESE DESIGNER MRS. VERNON FEHNANDO.

THE FIRST SHOT IS A MORNING AND CASUAL DRESS CALLED SAFARI...MEANING HUNTING.

SHOTS 2 AND 3 ARE TERMED "PREVIEW OF THE RACES."
SHOTS 4, 5 AND 6 WERE VARIATIONS, BY A LITTLE, OF THE SAREES, WORN BY INDIAN AND CEYLONESE LADIES. SAREES USUALLY DO NOT ADMIT OF TAILORING BECAUSE THEY ARE PIECES OF TEXTILE 36 TO 46 INCHES WIDE AND 5 TO 8 YARDS LONG, EITHER TAKEN OFF MILE MILL-PRODUCTION OR ELABORATELY WOVEN BY HANDLOOMS. THEY ARE WRAPPED DELICATELY WITH PLEASE AROUND THE WAIST AND THE END THROWN OVER THE SHOULDER ACROSS THE CHEST. BUT BY CHOICE OF MATERIAL, AND COLOUR COMBINATIONS THAT COULD BE HAD WITH BLOUSES, INFINITE VARIETIES COULD BE HAD. THE SAREE COVER THE MOST OF WEARER. BUT IT HIGHLY INTRIGUES THE MEN BY THE LITTLE IT REVEALS OF THE CURVES. SAREE DEMANDS THE "QUEENLY" GAIT THAT IS BEST ACHIEVED BY WEARING FLAT HEALED SLIPPERS.

OTHER SHOTS ARE OF EVENING WEAR, WITH A BRIDAL DRESS AS THE FINALE.

ELIZABETH WILSON WHO MODELLED THE DRESS "INTRIGUE" IS THE FORMER BEAUTY QUEEN OF CEYLON.
