  • Description

AUSTRIA AND DENMARK - TWO OF THE SMALLEST MEMBERS OF THE EUROPEAN FREE TRADE ASSOCIATION - THE "SEVEN" - ARE PONDERING THE VITAL CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR DECISION TO FOLLOW BRITAIN IN APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP OF THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY - THE "SIX".

AIM OF THE COMMON MARKET IS TO BRING GREATER PROSPERITY OF CREATING A SINGLE MARKET AS BIG AS THE UNITED STATES. CUSTOMS AND ALL OTHER BARRIERS WHICH HAMPER THE FREE MOVEMENT OF GOODS, MONEY AND WORKERS ARE TO BE ABOLISHED.

THIS MASS MARKET SHOULD GIVE MEMBERS CHEAPER IMPORTED GOODS IN THE SHOPS, BIGGER EXPORT MARKETS AND HIGHER LIVING STANDARDS THROUGH FASTER ECONOMIC GROWTH. BUT DURING THE TRANSITION PERIOD OF UNIFICATION, CERTAIN INDUSTRIES IN MEMBER COUNTRIES WILL SUFFER UNTIL OVERALL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IS ACHIEVED.

AUSTRIA, WHILE ANXIOUS TO LINK WITH THE COMMON MARKET, HAS STRESSED THAT AT PRESENT SHE WISHES TO SEEK ONLY ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP IN ORDER TO PRESERVE HER POSTWAR NEUTRALITY. ITS SEVEN MILLION POPULATION ENJOYS ONE OF EUROPE'S LOWEST COST OF LIVING LEVELS, AND THOUGH TRADE'S CONDUCTED CHIEFLY WITH EFTA NATIONS, IT IMPORTS A WIDE RANGE OF PRODUCTS, INCLUDING CARS, REFRIGERATORS, AND OTHER LUXURY GOODS, FROM GERMANY AND FRANCE - THE TWO LEADING COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES.

ONE ASPECT OF AUSTRALIA'S ECONOMY UNLIKELY TO BE AFFECTED BY COMMON MARKET MEMBERSHIP IS HER BOOMING TOURIST TRADE WHICH EARNS RICH FOREIGN CURRENCY EVERY YEAR.

DENMARK, ONE OF THE CONTINENT'S CHIEF AGRICULTURAL NATIONS, IS OPENLY WILLING TO JOIN THE "SIX". ANNOUNCING HIS COUNTRY'S INTENTION OF APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP ON JULY 31 - A FEW HOURS AFTER BRITAIN MADE ITS DECISION - DANISH FOREIGN MINISTER JENS OTTO KRAG TOLD THE DANISH PARLIAMENT THAT DENMARK WOULD JOIN ONLY IF BRITAIN DID. AS BRITAIN IS HER MAIN CUSTOMER OF DAIRY PRODUCE, DENMARK WILL DOUBTLESS INSIST ON GUARANTEES COVERING THIS MARKET. ON THE OTHER HAND, MANY OF DENMARK'S SECONDARY INDUSTRIES - PARTICULARLY CUTLERY, MOTOR AND PEDAL CYCLES, AND FOOTWEAR - WOULD PROBABLY BE HIT BY COMPETITION FROM OTHER COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES.

HOWEVER, UNTIL NEGOTIATIONS FOR COMMON MARKET MEMBERSHIP ARE WELL UNDER WAY, NEITHER COUNTRY WILL KNOW FOR CERTAIN HOW LOCAL INDUSTRY - BOTH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY - WILL BE AFFECTED UNDER THE ECONOMIC LINK-UP.
