  • Description

The 13th Ministerial conference of the Organisation for Co-ordination in the Fight Against Endemic Diseases (OCEAC) was held at N'Djamena in Chad last week. It began on Wednesday (26 October) and ran for three days with health ministers from all member countries participating.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates were welcomed to the opening session by Chad's Vice-President, Colonel Marami Djime Ngakinar. He commended the work of the organisation since its establishment 12 years ago.

OCEAC aims to standardise methods of fighting endemic diseases, and to co-ordinate programmes of assistance. At the conference delegates decided to begin publishing a regular bulletin to assist health authorities dealing with endemic diseases.

One of the major problems faced by these countries is Trypanosoma, which causes sleeping sickness in both humans and cattle. A resolution at the conference called for the establishment of a laboratory by member countries to specialise in diagnosis and immunisation against the disease.

The president of OCEAC, Gabonese Minister of Health Etienne-Guy Mouvagha, said the conference should reinforce their fight, and co-operation between the member countries. In this direction the delegates decided to hold regular two-yearly meetings for members of its working party.
