  • Description

In Italy, thousands of left-wing students demonstrated in the streets of Rome on Thursday (19 October) demanding sweeping educational reforms in schools and colleges throughout the country. The protest was part of a national day of action called by the students to highlight what they call the inadequacies of the present educational system.

SYNOPSIS: Most of the students were from Rome University. Their chanted slogans called on the government to speed up introducing the reform programme announced earlier this year. Leaflets the students handed out demanded a complete change of educational policy, and condemned recent attacks on left-wing students by extreme right-wing terrorists.

One of the students' aims was to draw attention to Italy's massive unemployment. With an estimated four hundred and fifty thousand graduates already among the country's one point seven million people out-of-work, many students fear they will be unable to find a job when they leave university. Some demonstrators demanded radical changes in the schooling system, which now produces more than a million college students every year.
