    General Matak, deputy leader of the Khmer Republic, returned to Phnom Penh on Monday (August 30) after a visit to the United States for talks with President Nixon. Ambassadors, cabinet ministers and army generals turned out at the airport to greet General Matak, who is deputising for the country's ailing leader, General Lon Nol.

    SYNOPSIS: The deputy leader of the Khmer Republic, General Sirik Matak, arrived back home in Phnom Penh on Monday, after a visit to the United States for talks with President Nixon.

    He was greeted by a reception party including the U.S. Ambassador, Mr. Emory Swank; Taiwan's Ambassador to the Khmer Republic; South Korean Ambassador Mr Lee Teak-keun; and several army generals. General Matak is deputising for the country's ailing leader, General Lon Nol.

    General Matak also greeted Lieutenant-Colonel Lon Non, brother of General Lon Nol, and one of the most successful commanders in the army. Speaking to newsmen, General Matak said President Nixon promised to continue aid to the Khmer Republic.
