Background: The world's fastest woman sprinter, Chi Cheng, married her American coach, Vince Reel, in a simple white wedding in the Taiwan capital of Taipeh on Sunday (27 December). The bride, who holds the 100 and 200 metres world records, is thirty years younger than her husband.
Miss Chi received a last-minute blessing from her parents, who earlier had opposed her engagement to 56-year old Mr. Reel. The bride's mother attended the wedding at the Presbyterian Church in Taipeh but her father was absent.
About 600 friends and sporting enthusiasts crowded into the church for the service. Afterwards the couple left for a brief honeymoon in Tokyo and Honolulu before going on to the United States.
Miss Chi said her wedding would not interfere with her track career. She still planned to run at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
