  • Description

At the Leopoldville radio station - scene of Lumumba's big humiliation - Ghana UN troops Sept 13 had temporarily withdrawn. Soon, a small convoy arrived - two jeeps, a black car and an armoured car. From the car emerged the Ileo-Kasavubu Government's Information Minister, Mr. Bolikango. He went into the radio station.

He then came out and made a short speech to the members of the public who had gathered outside, and journalists, to say the Lumumba government no longer existed.

Then, in he went again, this time to make a broadcast. He had arrived with Congolese police. While broadcasting, a troop of Congolese soldiers drove up. They were believed to be pro-Lumumba, but they said they supported the new Government, and all was well.

Afterwards, Bolikango repeated the text of his broadcast at a press conference in the big Memling hotel. He called for no "outside interference" in the Congo, and pledged to guarantee freedom of the press.
