Background: SYNOPSIS: For the first time in Canadian history -- an Indian has been appointed to the Senate. He is James Gladstone of the Blood Indian Reserve, southwest of Lethbridge, Alberta. The seventy-year old Senator, receiving congratulations from Chief Shot-Both-Sides, head Chief of the Blood band, is reputed to be a distant relative of Britain's nineteenth century Prime Minister, William Gladstone. Senator Gladstone, who is really only half Indian, introduced many of the white man's ideas to his reserve and has a farming and ranching ???up involving over seven-hundred cultivated ares and four hundred Hereford cattle.

In years gone by, he was an intercepts at the Anglican mission on the Blood reserved and chief scout and interpreter for the old Royal Northwest Mounted Police.
