  • Description

Just as Cyprus ceasefire talks reached initial agreement over one disputed area - north-east of Nicosia - there were reports of renewed fighting from other sectors of the island last night (August 5).

The four sides at the talks - Greece, Turkey, Britain and the United Nations - had the use of a British helicopter yesterday to help work out where the ceasefire lines should be.

The idea was to draw up concrete proposals to be set before the Geneva peace talks, which will be resumed on Thursday between representatives of Britain, Greece and Turkey, the three guarantors of Cyprus independence.

Latest fighting on the island started west of Kyrenia on the northern coast at dawn today, and was reported to have been heavy. The Turkish Army said its troops had repulsed a Greek-Cypriot attack. Counter-claims spoke of a Turkish attack in the area.

And in Kyrenia itself - the port from which the Turkish forces launched their invasion - troops have bene consolidating their positions in line with the Turkish claim that this territory will never be surrendered.
