    Turkish police say they have broken up the biggest counterfeit currency ring in the country's history. They sized about two million dollars in bogus United States dollar bills and arrested five men. Another man was arrested in Ankara, and an Israeli tourist was questioned after passing a 20-dollar counterfeit bill.

    Police said the centre of the operation was a printing works in the heart of Istanbul's newspaper district, where they found the faked bills in ten, twenty, and fifty dollar denominations. The men, who are now in custody, are alleged to have told police they had destroyed five hundred million dollars in counterfeit American bills because they were technically unsatisfactory.

    The ring is also alleged to have produced about on million two hundred thousand liras (about thirty six thousand pounds) worth of Turk???sh revenue stamps.
