  • Description

World Cup soccer...and Brazil are through to the next round of the South American qualifying competition for next year's Cup. They won through after drawing one-all with Paraguay on Sunday (20 March) in a home game in Rio De Janeiro. They beat Paraguay in an earlier game, and as the leaders in Group One, join the winners of the other two South American groups to decide who goes through to the finals.

SYNOPSIS: Brazil, in the plain gold shirts, playing right to left, kick off.

The first goal wasn't long in coming, and resulted from a foul on Brazil's Number 11, Paulo Cesar. Here's the foul.

The penalty was taken by Number 9, Roberto, giving Brazil a useful 1-nil lead after just five minutes.

But Paraguay weren't put off by the early set-back and retaliated, although this one was way off target.

Brazil attack again, but Cesar Number 11, doesn't quite finish it off. At half-time, Brazil still led one-nil.

Paraguay came out fighting in the second half determined to equalise. And they struck lucky. Their Number 11, Baez, hit the vital shot, to make it 1-all.

It was up to Brazil to get ahead again, and there was no doubting the skill of this attack, but disappointingly it failed to make a goal.

Paraguay had two men sent off and were down to nine men for the last ten minutes, but Brazil still couldn't score the winner.
