  • Description

As the number of deaths caused by floods in Northern Italy rose to twenty-two Sept 19, heavy rain continued to fall in many Provinces. Devastation caused by four successive days of thunderstorms is reported to have spread to Central Italy.

Some of the most tragic scenes of destruction and misery were filmed Sept 17-18 in the Bolzano, Lombardy and Trentino Provinces. Farmers and their families were marooned with their poultry in barn lofts; roads were complete awash, and traffic brought to a standstill; small villages were smashed as the all-engulfing waves swept through the streets; and vital crops inundated beneath the rising waters.

The storms have caused Italy's worst road and rail traffic tangle in the past ten years. All three main rail lines north from Rome are cut, as are coastal highways up both sides of the peninsula.

Floods and landslides have cut almost every major north-south line of travel in the northern part of the Italian peninsula. Reports that the Po, the Arno, the Tibe??? and a score of lesser rivers are rising, give dread warning that the next few days might cause Italy one of the most tragic disasters.

At least 3,000 persons are homeless, and the toll is expected to rise as reports from scores of isolated communities are confirmed.
