Background: President Johnson arrived in Thailand Friday (28 Oct) for a state visit as part of his Asian tour. He was received with full ceremonies by the King and Queen of the country.
The Thai King, Phumiphol Aduldet, greeted Mr. Johnson in front of the parliament building in Bangkok after arriving by helicopter. Unlike most of the receptions given the President, the one in Bangkok was reserved and quiet. This reception was in accord with the nature of the Thais, who characteristically receive their king and other dignitaries with a reserved manner. In keeping with this national custom, Mr. Johnson did not move into the crowds for a round of hand-shaking.
Also on hand to greet the President and Mrs. Johnson was Queen Sirikit, as well as many government and military officials.
The stop in Bangkok will be followed by trips to Malaysia and Seoul, Korea, after which the President will return to the United States.
