  • Description

THE U.S. ARMY DEMONSTRATED A LASER "GUN" ON FRIDAY (6 MARCH) AT THE FRANKFORD ARSENAL IN PHILADELPHIA. THE "GUN" CONSISTS OF A NORMAL LABORATORY LASER MOUNTED ON A RIFLE STOCK FOR EASE IN HANDLING. ITS FIRST MILITARY APPLICATION IS APT TO BE IN SOPHISTICATED RANGE FINDER SYSTEM.

IN THE PHILADELPHIA DEMONSTRATION, THE "GUN" WAS FIRED AT A PIECE OF CARBON PAPER. THE CONCENTRATED BEAM SINGED THE PAPER SLIGHTLY BUT HAD NO OTHER EFFECT. THE ARMY WILL USE IT AS A RANGE FINDER BY PROJECTING AN EXTREMELY SHORT PULSE OF LIGHT AT A VERY HIGH INTENSITY. THE TIME TAKEN FOR THIS PULSE TO PROCEED TO A TARGET AND RETURN CAN BE MEASURED AND A VERY ACCURATE "LIGHT RADAR" FINDER THUS DEVELOPED.
