Background: The continuing war between Iran and Iraq will soon be entering its third year, with no sign of a cessation of hostilities. The Iraqi Government admits to being surprised at the number of men the Iranians have used in their offensives, but there has been no shortage of volunteers. In Teheran, (6 July) more men lined up with their belongings to prepare to leave for the front. Many of the soldiers are young boys--the Iraqis claim to have captured nine-year-old fighters--who believe that 'paradise' awaits them if they die for their country. Conflicting casualty reports have been issued by both governments, but more than 100,000 soldiers are known to have died. Although the original offensive was launched by Iraq, they now appear to be losing the overall battle, and their military hardware appears to be in danger of running out. President Saddam Hussein has received vast amounts of military and economic aid from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries, but the war has brought the country to the brink of financial disaster, and he has dropped all his pre-conditions for ending the fighting. Meanwhile, in Teheran, the volunteers continue to pour into the recruiting stations, convinced they are fighting for a just cause and aiding the Islamic revolution.
