    ON THE EVE OF HIS DEPARTURE FOR TALKS IN HONOLULU WITH PRESIDENT JOHNSON, THE PRIME MINISTER OF SOUTH VIETNAM, GENERAL KY, TOOK TIME OFF TO VISIT A VILLAGE IN BINH DINH PROVINCE WHICH HAS BEEN OCCUPIED BY AN ALLIED FORCE. THE VILLAGE HAD BEEN UNDER VIET CONG CONTROL FOR EIGHT MONTHS.

    GENERAL KY FLEW TO THE OPERATION MASHER BATTLE ZONE WITH HIS WIFE AND TOP COLLEAGUES IN THE SAIGON GOVERNMENT. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS SOME SNIPER FIRE JUST BEFORE THE PARTY ARRIVED, IT WAS ALL QUIET DURING THEIR VISIT AND INSPECTION OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE, SOUTH KOREAN AND AMERICAN TROOPS WHO HAD FOUGHT FIERCELY FOR SEVERAL DAYS TO CAPTURE THE VILLAGE.

    THE GENERAL SAW A MEMORIAL LEFT IN THE VILLAGE BY THE RETREATING VIET CONG FORCES, AND WALKED PAST HOUSES DESTROYED BOMBS AND SHELLS.
