  • Description

A huge fire destroyed warehouses on the waterfront of Buenos Aires harbour on Tuesday (24 June).

One of the warehouses was completely destroyed when a fuel truck inside exploded. A number of firemen were injured in the blast.

It is not known whether the blaze was caused by sabotage but the Argentine capital has been wrecked by industrial and political and political unrest in recent months.

While coast guard firemen fought the blaze, other armed members of the marine force stood guard to prevent looting.

Total losses in the fire have yet to be calculated but they are estimated to run into several hundred thousand pounds.

SYNOPSIS:It is not known what caused the blaze. Sabotage has not been ruled out by investigators. Argentina's capital has been wrecked by industrial and political unrest -- often flaring into violence -- in recent months. Thick black smoke swathed the dockside area making the firefighter's task even more difficult.

Armed Coast Guards ringed the area to prevent looting.

The Coast Guard also swung in its own fire fighting units to the scene to aid beleaguered teams from the Buenos Aires city fire brigade.

Some of the firemen were overcome by smoke and ambulance were rushed to the scene.
