  • Description

Air pollution in New York City reached a level officially termed "dangerous to health" on Monday (27 July) and the Weather Buerau said no relief was in sight for at least two more days.

An eye-smarting smog hanging over the city contained 21 parts of sulphur dioxide to one-million parts of air -- twice the ratio deemed hazardous.

It was even dangerous getting into New York. Some commuters had to be carried into the polluted air after trains stalled in a railroad tunnel. Some passengers were trapped in the tunnel for more than an hour while firemen fought a smokey fire which had forced the commuter line to shut off power lines. Four passengers were taken to hospitals.

The high temperature coupled with unusually high humidity sent thousands of other New Yorkers into the parks. But even in these urban sanctuaries there was no relief from the pervasive pollution.
