UPSHAW:"On this Sunday in Seoul many Christian services included brief memorials to Park Chung-Hee. While at the presidential mansion a small private service was held for Park. In attendance the new acting President Choi Kyu-hah, a man many American hope will keep South Korea's economy going strong. Up near the border with North Korea some of the thirty-nine thousand American troops in this country had a normal Sunday including picnics. They're in a higher state of alert since the Park Chung-hee killing, but there's no word of increased Communist activity."

Background: An interim report on the death of South Korean strongman Park Chung-hee said that he was the victim of a premeditated plot by the head of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency. Park, who was gunned down in a KCIA dining room, had ruled South Korea for eighteen years. According to yesterday's (28 October) announcement by the martial law command, Park was assassinated by Kim Jae Kyu the head of the KCIA, who according to sources in Seoul, feared that Park might replace him in a much rumoured cabinet shuffle.

SYNOPSIS: President Park made his last official appearance on Friday afternoon at the opening of a new dam. Later that day he was apparently invited to dine with KCIA chief Kim Jae Kyu at the KCIA headquarters.

According to the new version of the following hours the assassination plot was worked out by Kim with five KCIA subordinates. Also at the dinner were Mr. Cha, Park's chief bodyguard, and Mr. Kim Jae Won, the chief presidential secretary. Mr. Cha was also killed during the shootout, however Mr. Kim survived the gunfire although there has been no word of his whereabouts.

The death of Park has also brought a swift response from the United States. President Carter has warned North Korea not to take advantage of the situation. Jim Upshaw of NBC reports.
