  • Description

At least ten people are dead and more than seven and a half thousand homeless as a result of floods from the swollen Limpopo River in southern Mozambique.

Heavy rains over a long period in the River's headlands have caused the disaster. The river burst its banks causing flooding in low lying areas. Crops have been destroyed and villages inundated in the Gaza region of the country.

Some seventeen-and-a-half-thousand tons of medicine food and blankets have been flown into the capital, Lourenco Marques, by the United Nations Childrens' Fund (UNICEF) as aid for the homeless. Rice, maize and clothing make up the majority of the supplies.

The floods came just after a warning by a study group that Mozambique faces the threat of starvation because of capital outflow following the granting of independence. The country has little to offer in foreign exchange and cannot afford to buy overseas.
