  • Description

Former journalist Servan Schreiber faces the most crucial test of his political career when, as Radical Party Secretary-General, he contests an important by-election at Nancy today (Sunday 21st June), after a week of controversial campaigning.

Servan Schreiber, now 46 years old, is looking to a victory in the by-election as this would reinforce his claim to a leading place in France's non-communist opposition. The by-election became necessary when Roger Souchal resigned the seat which he won on a Gaullist ticket, because the major Eastern Motorway project was not to be routed through Nancy. M. Souchal is now opposing Schreiber as an independent candidate, but the government is believed to be fearful that a Schreiber win would appear as a defeat for the majority.

Servan Schreiber is noted for his barnstorming American-style campaigning and frequently provokes controversy. During the past week his main platform has been the need to bring economic and industrial prosperity to Lorraine, and he proposes the formation of an international group to achieve this. Among possible participants he has named, is Dr. Herman Abs ... President of the West German Deutsche Bank. This has upset his opponents, and Finance Minister Valery D'Estaing in particular, who has had to abandon meeting speeches because of strong heckling on the subject.

Speaking to member of the Nancy constituency on Friday (19th June) M. Schreiber ... who won extra support recently for assisting Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis into France ... said that if elected he was confident of early changes for the better in Nancy.
