Background: Sean Lemass, Deputy Prime Minister of Eire, was filmed June 15 by VISNEWS unveiling a 14-ft limestone memorial, at Clifden, County Galway, to Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten-Brown --- first men to fly non-stop across the north Atlantic.

Shaped like an aircraft tail fin, the memorial has been erected just one and a half miles from the place where the Vickers 'Vimy' bomber landed --- exactly 40 years ago.

Present at the unveiling ceremony were two brothers of Sir John Alcock, and Mr. F.H. Teague, first man to reach the plane when it landed. -- 16 hours, 27 minutes after the take-off.

Recalling the epic flight, Deputy Premier Lemass said: "They had no navigational equipment, no weather ships, no automatic pilot and even n protection from the weather in their open cockpit". It was not easy to appreciate the magnitude of the adventure of measure the courage for which it called.
