Background: The Duke of Edinburgh opened the ???3 million 'Prince Philip Lock' at Shoreham Harbour, in Sussex, Tuesday, 20th. May, when the Motor Vessel 'Balmoral' passed through the lock and broke the white ribbon, spanning the water, with her bows.
From the 'Balmoral' the Duke waved to a large crowd of people around the harbour. Along the quayside was a naval Guard of Honour and a military band. Accompanying Prince Philip was the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk.
The Duke of Edenburgh flew to Shoreham Airport in the morning, and after the opening ceremony he went to the Hotel Metropols, Brighton, were he was entertained for lunch by the Chairman and Trustees of Shoreham Harbour.
The harbour has been involved in a programme of improvement and enlargement for some few years, and the new lock, which took three years to build, is another step to developing Shoreham's potentialities as a South Coast port.
