  • Description

A four-day seminar was held int he Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan last week to examine ways and means of reducing the country's high accident rate.

SYNOPSIS: With the streets of Abidjan choked with heavy traffic, and a very high accident rate elsewhere in the country, the Ivory Coast has held the world record for road accidents since 1973. Last year there were 8,000 traffic accidents in Abidjan and 30,000 incidents in the Ivory Coast as a whole. Road casualty figures for 1976 show that 464 people have been killed and nearly five thousand injured so far.

The Ivory Coast authorities attribute the high accident rate to two main factors - speeding and the poor condition of many vehicles. Lack of proper control over pedestrian and animal traffic is also a problem - and the road safety seminar examined possible methods of tightening up in these areas - as well as better education and stricter rules for motorists.

The Ivory Coast is engaged in an extensive highway improvement programme - very necessary in view of the fact that with 125,000 vehicles on the road it is one of the most highly motorised countries in Africa.

The road safety seminar took place at the Treichville Congress Hall in Abidjan and was organised by the Ivory Coast Minister of Internal Security, Monsieur Ouassenan Kone. In his opening address the Minister called for concrete proposals to reduce traffic accidents. Among the delegates were Monsieur Mathieu Ekra, Minister of State for the Interior, Monsieur Desire Boni, Minister of transport and Public Works and Justice Minister Monsieur Camille Alliali.
