    DR. KENNETH KAUNDA, PRESIDENT OF THE NEWLY-INDEPENDENT STATE OF ZAMBIA HAD TALKS IN CAIRO YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WITH PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC. THE MEETING CAME TOWARDS THE END OF A SIX-DAY VISIT TO CAIRO BY DR. KAUNDA, WHO IS ON A MONTH-LONG TOUR OF WORLD CAPITALS.

    ALSO PRESENT AT YESTERDAY'S MEETING, HELD AT THE REPUBLICAN PALACE AT KUBBAH, WAS THE UAR VICE-PRESIDENT, ABDUL HAKIM AMER -- WHO US ALSO FOREIGN MINISTER -- AND THE UAR PRIME MINISTER, ALY SABRY.

    FROM CAIRO, DR. KAUNDA IS GOING ON TO LONDON, WASHINGTON, OTTAWA AND SCANDINAVIA BEFORE RETURNING TO LUSAKA. HIS TRIP IS PART OF A PLAN TO MODERNISE THE NEW STATE AND DEVELOP HER ECONOMY WITH AID FROM FOREIGN COUNTRIES. HE HOPES TO RETURN TO ZAMBIA WITH AT LEAST THREE THOUSAND TRACTORS AND WITH PROMISES OF SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO GIVE EVERYONE "A GLASS OF MILK AND AN EGG" EACH MORNING. WHILE IN LONDON, DR. KAUNDA WILL DISCUSS PLANS FOR A STEEL MILL WHICH HE HOPES WILL BE OPERATING IN ZAMBIA WITHIN TWO YEARS. A BRITISH FIRM IS GIVING AID IN THIS PROJECT.

    DURING THE PRESIDENT'S ABSENCE, THE VICE-PRESIDENT, MR. KAMANGE IS HEADING THE ADMINISTRATION IN LUSAKA.
