THE SMALL NORTH OF ENGLAND SEATOWN WHERE CAPTAIN JAMES COOK LEARNED THE BASIC SAILING SKILLS THAT WERE TO MAKE HIS NAME FAMOUS AS A NAVIGATOR AND EXPLORER IS CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS FIRST HISTORIC VOYAGE TO NEW ZEALAND.

THE TOWN - WHITBY - STANDS HIGH ON BLEAK CLIFFS OVERLOOKING THE TURBULENT NORTH SEA. ITS TRADITIONS ARE FIRMLY ROOTED IN HISTORY. IN MEDIEVAL TIMES IN EXISTED AS A PORT WHICH TRADED WITH CONTINENTAL EUROPE, AND THE ANCIENT ABBEY CHURCH WHICH STANDS ABOVE THE TOWN IS ONE OF THE CRADLES OF ENGLISH CHRISTIANITY.

IT WAS HERE THAT JAMES COOK CAME IN 1746 AS AN APPRENTICE TO A QUAKER SHIPOWNER. AFTER HIS APPRENTICESHIP COOK SPENT TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST. IN 1755 HE TURNED DOWN THE OFFER OF HIS OWN COMMAND AND JOINED THE ROYAL NAVY AS AN ABLE SEAMAN. PROMOTION CAME QUICKLY AND HE SOON HAD COMMAND OF HIS OWN SHIP.

IN 1768 CAME THE VOYAGE THAT WAS TO MAKE HIM WORLD FAMOUS. COOK WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE ROYAL NAVY AS MASTER OF HMS ENDEAVOUR BARK, A COLLIER THAT HAD BEEN BUILT IN WHITBY. HIS JOB WAS TO TAKE OUT A PARTY OF OBSERVERS TO TAHITI TO OBSERVE THE TRANSIT OF VENUS IN A BID TO FIX THE EARTH'S DISTANCE FROM THE SUN.

THE SECOND PART OF HIS MISSION WAS TO LOOK FOR LAND BETWEEN TAHITI AND NEW ZEALAND. THIS WAS THE START OF CAPTAIN COOK'S LONG AFFAIR WITH NEW ZEALAND. HE WAS TO RETURN IN 1772 AS MASTER OF TWO SHIPS, HMS RESOLUTION AND HMS ADVENTURE.

TODAY THE HOUSE WHERE COOK LIVED WHILE LEARNING HIS TRADE STILL STANDS - A MAGNET FOR TOURISTS. COOK'S THREE VOYAGES, FROM 1768 DID MORE TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE THAN HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DONE.

THIS YEAR THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS COINCIDED WITH THE ANNUAL WHITBY REGATTA. AMONG THOSE DRAWN TO WHITBY FOR THE CELEBRATIONS WERE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE GOVERNMENTS OF NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA AND TASMANIA. DURING THE CELEBRATIONS A CAPTAIN COOK MUSEUM WAS OPENED.
