  • Description

THE PORTUGUESE ISLAND OF SAO TOME LIES IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ONLY SOME 300 MILES (480 KMS) DUE SOUTH FROM THE COAST OF NIGERIA BECAUSE OF ITS STRATEGIC LOCATION, IT HAS BECOME THE LOGICAL PLACE FOR RELIEF ORGANISATIONS TO STOCKPILE THE FOOD AND SUPPLIES WHICH ARE POURING IN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR. BUT, AS PORTUGAL IS ONE OF THE FOUR COUNTRIES FROM WHICH NIGERIA HAS REFUSED ALL HELP BECAUSE OF THEIR PREVIOUS SUPPORT OF BIAFRA, THE STOCKPILES ARE MOUNTING WHILE AUTHORITIES WAIT FOR THE GO-AHEAD TO FLY THEM IN TO THE WAR-TORN AREAS.

AT SAO TOME AIRPORT, RELIEF AIRCRAFT WAIT ON THE TARMAC WHILE ONE OF THE HANGARS IS USED AS A MAKESHIFT WAREHOUSE TO STORE SOME 7,500 TONS OF THE 15,000 TONS OF GOODS WHICH ARE ESTIMATED TO BE STOCKPILED ON THE ISLAND.

THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN REFUSAL TO ALLOW PORTUGAL, FRANCE, SOUTH AFRICA AND RHODESIA TO SEND HELP TO THE FORMER SECESSIONIST TERRITORIES OF BIAFRA, STEMS FROM THE FACT THAT THEY CLAIM THAT THE AID AND ARMS SENT IN BY THE FOUR COUNTRIES ONLY HELPED PROLONG THE WAR AND THE KILLING.

ALREADY A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF THE FOOD STORED ON THE ISLAND HAS STARTED TO SHOW SIGNS OF DETERIORATION. IN AN ATTEMPT TO USE SOME OF IT UP BEFORE IT BECOMES UNUSABLE, SEVERAL TONS HAVE BEEN FLOWN TO LIBREVILLE, GABON, TO FEED THE REFUGEES WHO WENT THERE FROM BIAFRA JUST BEFORE THE END OF THE WAR.

MEANWHILE, AS GOVERNMENTS AND ORGANISATIONS ATTEMPT TO SORT OUT THE PROBLEMS, REPORTS FROM WITHIN THE FORMER WAR AREAS ARE CONFUSED AS TO EXACTLY HOW WELL THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT IS COPING WITH THE FEEDING AND CARE OF THE REPORTED ONE MILLION VICTIMS OF THE WAR.
