  • Description

Communist-led insurgents launched one of their heaviest rocket attacks against Phnom Penh on Tuesday (25 February), while the United States Embassy in the Khmer capital announced a big airlift of weapons to the beleaguered city.

More than 35 Chinese-made 107mm rockets crashed into the western and northern suburbs of Phnom Penh, and Pochentong airport. A full casualty list has not yet been released, but initial reports indicated that only one civilian had been killed and fewer than 20 other people wounded.

In an early morning attack, several rockets landed in Phnom Penh's central market. Only light casualties were reported, but two-thirds of the market's fruit and general merchandise stalls were destroyed.

Tuesday's attack came just before news reached Phnom Penh of the fall of Oudong, the former Khmer capital. It was the second time in less than one year that Oudong fell to the insurgents.

The fall of Oudong now gives the insurgents virtual complete control of a corridor from the holy city to Prek Pneu, eight miles (13 kms) north of Phnom Penh.
