Four major strikes are threatened Monday (SEPT. 30) in New York City. The City's Police, Firemen and Sanitation Workers are threatening to either leave their jobs or to call a partial strike....or Job Action Protest...against the city because they have not agreed with the city on a new labour contract. The Police and Firemen say they will perform essential services...but none of what they term non-essential services, such as traffic work, fire inspections, towing away illegally parked cars, etc. The Sanitation Men threaten a repeat of their strike of a year ago, when garbage pile up in the streets at the rate of ten thousands tons a day. New York City, the U.S.' largest port, also would be hit by a walkout of longshoremen. The Longshoremen's strike would affect all east coast ports...from Maine to the Texas coast near Mexico.
