Background: A violent explosion near the centre of Belfast on Friday (29 Oct.) destroyed two shops and a police station....killing a police inspector and injuring two officers. Other policemen, shopowners and civilians had miraculous escapes from injury. A gunman entered the grocery shop next to the station and placed a bomb, after warning the owner and customers to run clear. Moments after he made his getaway the bomb exploded, shattering the three buildings.

SYNOPSIS: In Belfast another violent bomb blast on Friday. This time the target was again a police station near the centre of the city, but in a prosperous and normally trouble-free area.

After entering a grocery shop and warning the owner and civilians to take cover, a gunman left a bomb there. Moments after he had made his escape it exploded...shattering the grocery shop, a second shop, and the neighbouring police station.

Two injured policemen were quickly rescued by firemen and volunteers working frantically among the rubble, but an inspector...who'd been working in his first-floor office at the time of the blast, was found dead.

The bomb contained an estimated 100 pounds (45 kilos) of gelignite. A policeman, fortunate to escape without injury, describes the incident.
