  • Description

THE ENTIRE U.S. INFANTRY BATTALION DROVE THE AUTOBAHN TO WEST BERLIN TODAY (SATURDAY) WITHOUT BEING DELAYED BY EAST GERMAN FORCES. AT THE SAME TIME, MOSCOW ANNOUNCED THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF SOVIET-EAST GERMAN MANOEUVRES WHICH HAD CAUSED THE HOLD-UPS ON THE ROAD LINK.

IT WAS THE BIGGEST ALLIED FORCE TO USE THE AUTOBAHN SINCE THE EAST GERMAN TOOK "TEMPORARY BLOCKADE MEASURES" TEN DAYS AGO. THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT SAID THE MEASURES WERE NECESSARY TO MOVE TROOPS QUICKLY IN THE EAST GERMAN-SOVIET EXERCISE.

THE FOURTH BATTALION, EIGHTEENTH INFANTRY, CONSISTING OF 451 MEN, ROLLED I MORE THAN 100 TRUCKS. THEY WERE DRESSED IN FULL BATTLE ORDER WITH RIFLES CRADLED IN THEIR ARMS. THEY AMERICANS SAW ONLY A HANDFUL OF SOVIET SOLDIERS AND NONE OF THE TANKS AND TRUCKS HAD DELAYED MOTORISTS ON THE AUTOBAHN FOR THE PAST WEEK.

DAWN WAS BREAKING OVER THE ALLIED CHECKPOINT AT HELMSTEDT AS THE FIRST TROOPS CROSSED THE BORDER. WEST GERMAN POLICE CARS ESCORTED IT PAST THE SIX MILES (NINE KILOMETRE) LINE OF CIVILIAN TRAFFIC WAITING TO BE CLEARED THROUGH THE EAST GERMAN CHECKPOINT WHERE THERE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN DELAYS UP TO 24 HOURS. A SOVIET OFFICER PASSED THE CONVOY THROUGH WITHOUT DELAY AND THE TROOPS HAD A SMOOTH RUN DOWN THE 110 MILE (176 KILOMETRES) INTERZONAL AUTOBAHN TO BABELSBERG CHECKPOINT WHERE ANOTHER SOVIET OFFICER PASSED THEM THROUGH AGAIN WITHOUT DELAY.

IN WEST BERLIN TODAY, A U.S. SPOKESMAN DENIED THAT THEY WERE TESTING EAST GERMAN REACTION OR DEMONSTRATING THE ALLIED RIGHT OF ACCESS TO BERLIN. HE SAID THE CONVOYS -- THERE WERE FOUR ALTOGETHER - WERE PLANNED BEFORE THE DELAYS ON THE AUTOBAHN. THE BATTALION WAS RETURNING FROM ROUTINE INTENSIVE TRAINING IN BAVARIA.

THE EAST GERMAN GOVERNMENT HAS CALLED AN "IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE" ON MONDAY, DISCLOSING ONLY THAT IT CONCERNS WEST GERMANY AND "WILL BE VERY INTERESTING."
ALLIED OFFICIALS IN BERLIN BELIEVE THAT THE CONFERENCE WILL SHOW IF BERLIN FACES A PROLONGED NEW PERIOD OF TENSION.
