  • Description

WELSH NATIONALISTS, WHO WANT WALES TO BE A SELF-GOVERNING STATE, WON THEIR FIRST HOUSE OF COMMONS SEAT TODAY (FRIDAY) IN A SENSATIONAL BY--ELECTION VICTORY. FERVENT NATIONALISTS SNAG WELSH HYMNS IN THE STREETS OF CARMARTHEN AFTER A 54-YEAR-OLD MARKET GARDENER, MR. GWYNFOR EVANS, CAPTURED THE SEAT FROM BRITAIN'S RULING LABOUR PARTY IN A FOUR-CORNERED FIGHT. WELSH NATIONALIST PARTY (PLAID CYMRU) FERVOUR WAS EXPRESSED VIOLENTLY LAST OCTOBER IN A DEMONSTRATION PROTESTING AGAINST THE OPENING OF A NORTH WALES RESERVOIR TO SUPPLY THE ENGLISH CITY OF LIVERPOOL. CULTURALLY, WELSH NATIONALISM ACHIEVES SYMBOLIC EXPRESSION AT THE EISTEDDFOD FESTIVAL, WHERE EACH YEAR A BARD IS CROWNED
MR. EVANS, FOR 21 YEARS PRESIDENT OF PLAID CYMRU, WON THE SEAT BY MORE THAN 2,400 VOTES -- A MASSIVE REBUFF TO LABOUR, WHICH HELD CARMARTHEN WITH A 9,200 MAJORITY. JUBILANT NATIONALISTS, WHO DEMAND HOME RULE WITH COMMONWEALTH STATUS, CHEERED WILDLY WHEN EVANS DECLARED "THIS IS A GREAT NATIONAL RESURGENCE".

THE CARMARTHEN BY-ELECTION, FIRST OF ITS KIND SINCE THE 31 MARCH GENERAL ELECTION, WAS CAUSED BY THE DEATH OF LADY MEGAN LLOYD GEORGE, DAUGHTER OF DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, BRITISH LEADER IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR. MR. EVANS DECLARED WHEN THE RESULT WAS ANNOUNCED: "AFTER THIS, A PARLIAMENT FOR WALES CANNOT BE LONG DELAYED."
IN 1958, HE TOURED THE USA TO EXPLAIN HIS PLATFORM OF HOME RULE FOR WALES WITH PROTECTION FOR THE COUNTRY'S CULTURE AND TRADITIONS. WALES, A PRINCIPALITY GOVERNED FROM LONDON WITH ITS OWN MEMBERS IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, HAS A POPULATION OF MORE THAN 2,500,000. IT WAS TAKEN OVER BY THE ENGLISH CROWN 430 YEARS AGO.

LAST 21 OCTOBER NATIONALIST PASSIONS RAN HIGH AS WATERS FLOWED FOR THE FIRST TIME FROM A NEW 19 MILLION STERLING RESERVOIR IN THE REMOTE NORTH WALES TRYWERYN VALLEY ON THEIR WAY TO THE ENGLISH SEAPORT OF LIVERPOOL. WHAT WAS PLANNED AS A PASSIVE DEMONSTRATION BY PLAID CYMRU DEVELOPED INTO HOURS OF JEERING, BANNER-WAVING, STONE-THROWING AND GENERAL OBSTRUCTION. POLICE WERE KEPT BUSY STOPPING THE DEMONSTRATORS FROM HOLDING UP THE OFFICIALS OPENING CEREMONY. SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO WORE MILITARY-TYPE CAPS IN THE GREEN-AND-WHITE NATIONAL COLOURS, CLAIMED TO BE MEMBERS OF THE "FREE WELSH ARMY".

(BECAUSE OF A GENERAL SHORTAGE OF WATER AND RAPIDLY INCREASING DEMAND, CITIES IN NORTHWEST ENGLAND ARE RELYING MORE AND MORE ON RESERVOIRS BUILT IN NORTH WALES.)
THE BARD-CROWNING CEREMONY PICTURED TOOK PLACE IN CARDIFF ON 2 AUGUST 1960. THE CEREMONY, PERFORMED BY WHITE-ROBED MEMBERS OF THE ANCIENT ORDER OF DRUIDS, IS PART OF A WEEK-LONG GATHERING OF WELSH CULTURAL GROUPS THAT IS ROUNDED OFF BY A SERIES OF CHORAL COMPETITIONS.

THE 1960 BARD WAS A 44-YEAR-OLD BAPTISTS CLERGYMAN, THE REVEREND W. J. GRUFFYDD. THE RECEIVED THE CROWN FROM THE ARCHDRUID FOR HIS PRIZE-WINNING PEEM "SOLITUDE."
