  • Description

THE CUNARD LINER "QUEEN MARY" ENDED HER LAST TRANS-ATLANTIC PASSENGER VOYAGE TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) AT HER HOME PORT OF SOUTHAMPTON ON THE ENGLISH SOUTH COAST, AMID A CLOUD OF SENTIMENT AND A FAMILIAR DOCKSIDE CRISIS -- THE BAGGAGE HANDLERS WERE OUT ON STRIKE.
SIRENS TOOTED, SMALL BOATS SCURRIED AROUND AND A BAND BLARED OUT ACROSS THE QUAYSIDE WHEN THE 81,000 TONS LINER NOSED INTO THE DOCKS THAT HAVE BEEN HER HOME FOR 31 YEARS. AFTER A COUPLE OF SHORT AUTUMN CRUISES, THE FAMOUS LINER WILL SAIL OFF FOREVER AND SETTLE DOWN TO RETIREMENT MOORED PERMANENTLY OFF LONG BEACH, IN THE AMERICAN STATE OF CALIFORNIA, WHERE SHE'LL BE A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
THE QUEEN MARY ARRIVED IN SOUTHAMPTON TONIGHT HALF AN HOUR AFTER THE PORT'S 650 HEAVY BAGGAGE HANDLERS HAD GONE HOME AFTER REFUSING TO WORK OVERTIME AS PART OF THEIR CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER PAY AND PENSIONS. THE DISPUTE OBLIGED PASSENGERS TO WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW FOR THEIR HEAVY BAGGAGE, BUT DID LITTLE TO SUBDUE THE SHIPBOARD ATMOSPHERE OF NOSTALGIA.
THE AGEING BUT BEAUTIFUL SHIP, STREWN WITH MULTI-COLOURED STREAMERS, ANSWERED THE GREETINGS OF CROWDS AND BOAT WHISTLES WITH EAR-SHATTERING BLASTS FROM HER FOR-SIREN. AT LONG BEACH, THE QUEEN MARY WILL SERVE AS A FLOATING MARITIME MUSEUM. SHE "IS BEING REPLACED ON THE TRANS-ATLANTIC RUN BY THE BRAND NEW "QUEEN ELIZABETH II" LAUNCHED LAST WEEK IN GLASGOW.
