  • Description

The high winds dropped on Thursday (14 August) raising hopes that after a week of toil, firemen may be able to control the huge heath and forest fire sweeping through foliage near Luechow in northern Germany.

The blaze, which may have been started by a discarded cigarette, has killed five firemen, destroyed more than tow million trees and devastated an area of 35 square miles (100 square kms).

At the moment only huge fire breaks made by West German army tanks are keeping the fire in check. But late reports say the wind, which has fanned the flames, has dropped and this will help the situation.

The biggest fires are still blazing around the village of Luechow, only five miles (eight kms) from the East German border. All villagers have been evacuated.

SYNOPSIS: A week of toil and heartbreak in northern Germany may be nearing an end. Strong winds which fanned a massive heath and forest fire in the Luechow region have dropped, giving firemen and volunteers a chance to contain the blaze.

Local firemen have been joined by members of foreign armies stationed in the area. They have battled for seven nights and days cutting firebreaks with tanks and trying to prevent the blaze sweeping through villages in the region.

Three French amphibious water bomb aircraft and more than thirty German army helicopters have been called in to fight individual fires. Swirling winds which fanned the flames to-and-fro across the parched woodlands since last Friday faded early Thursday .. giving hope that the blaze could be contained.

Latest reports say the biggest fires are still blazing around the village of Luechow, not far from the Last German border. The village has been evacuated.

The blaze, which may have been started by a discarded cigarette, has killed five firemen, destroyed more than two million trees and devastated an area of thirty-five square miles.
