  • Description

Israeli tanks and artillery are standing by along the country's northern border as a warning to Syria not to mass any of its forces in southern Lebanon.
Israel reinforced its troops along the border with Lebanon a week ago to counter any possible Syrian movements into southern Lebanon. Extra infantry and armour were moved in last Monday (22 November). The Israelis were concerned by two rocket and bazooka attacks across the frontier during the weekend after almost a year's lull. The authorities said they would not tolerate the return of Arab guerrillas - or a large influx of Syrian troops - to positions just north of the mountainous frontier.
Prime Minister, Mr. Yitzhak Robin, was reported to have warned the Syrians against bringing in troops at a meeting with United States Ambassador Mr. Malcolm Toon. Mr. Rabin also expressed concern at the renewed activity of guerrillas in the border area after the long period of peace. Israeli Defence Minister Shimon Peres said Israel would only accept Lebanese troops along the border and not Syrians, Palestinians or any other foreign forces.
