  • Description

The countdown for veteran United States baseballer Henry Aaron reached 14 on Saturday (21 July) when he made his 700th home run in Atlanta, Georgia, (USA).

And by making it 700, the 39-year-old hero of the Atlanta Braves is closing in fast on the all-time home run record held by the late Babe Ruth.

Number 700 came up before a packed clubhouse audience after drilling his 27th home run of the season off Philadelphia left-hander Ken Brett in the third innings at the Atlanta Stadium.

Aaron was cheered wildly as the fast ball went right into the crowd. Banners and streamers were thrown into the arena, and a huge sign which read '700' was unfurled.

Aaron is one of the first blacks to have won his way into major league in baseball, but the still said after his famous 700 that Babe Ruth was the greatest of them all.
