Background: President Emilio Garrastzu Medici of Brazil arrived in Lisbon on Monday (May 14) to begin a five day official visit to Portugal.
He was received with full military honours at the airport and was welcomed by Portuguese President America Thomaz, Prime Minister Marcello Caetano and civilian and military leaders.
The visit in exchange for one made to Brazil last year by president Thomaz will stress the close ties between the two Portuguese speaking countries.
Economic observers feel that Brazil's desire to keep its "mother country" Portugal as a close ally is mainly due to its efforts to keep a foothold in the European market -- and an open door into the European Community if Portugal should ever become a member.
During his visit the Brazilian President will visit the cities of Oporto, Guimaraes and Santarem, where he will lay a wreath at the tomb of Pedro Alvares Cabral who discovered Brazil in 1500.
