  • Description

The United Nations Committee on South West Africa met in the New York headquarter July 8 hear further evidence in its inquiry into ditrubances last December in the mandated territory fo Southwest Africa - a Union of South Africa possession. Violence broke out when the Union government transferred the native inhabitants of Windhook to Katura.

The Committee heard three petitoner from the Windhoek community tell why natives resisted the government. One petitioner said his people resented the principle on which the move was being made-apartheid. Other reasons -higher cost of living in Katura, strictor enforcement of Pass Laws and low wages.

The trio petitioned the Committee to send a UN commission into the territory - which is the only African region, mandated under the old League of Nations but not brought under UN trusteeship after the second world war.
