  • Description

Syrian forces today rained rockets and heavy artillery fire on left-wing Palestinian positions in the mountains east of Beirut in a new attack forcing an indefinite postponement of talks aimed at ending Lebanon's civil war.

SYNOPSIS: The Syrian attacks were on positions on or near the main road linking Beirut with eastern Lebanon and Syria, barring the way to Shtoura.

Two days ago in Shtoura (11 October) the Arab League peace envoy, Dr. Hassan Sabri Al-Kholi told newsmen that Syria, Lebanon, and the Palestinians had reached a tentative agreement to end the Lebanese civil war. He said he hoped a ceasefire would be implemented soon. The results of the talks which lasted eight hours were to be submitted to the leaders of the factions involved in the 18-month old war. Wednesday's meeting was to have seen the signing of the agreement. After the conference Dr. Kholi talked with newsman Ronald Robson, on the chances of there being a lasting agreement.
