  • Description

The two giant Pandas given by The People's Republic of China to Japan, were officially presented to Tokyo's Ueno (pron Way-noh) Zoo on Saturday (November 3). The gift of the pandas - female Lan Lan (Gentle Flower) and male Kang (Healthy) - is one of the gestures of goodwill to mark the resumption of Sino-Chinese diplomatic relations.

They were presented to the Zoo by Chang Shao, Kuang, of the public Affairs Division of Peking City municipality. Receiving them in the name of the Japanese Government, were Chief Cabinet Secretary Susumu Nikaido. The following day (Sunday) they were shown to the public - large crowds were expected.

The three-year-old Lan Lan weighs about 80 killogrammes (176 pounds). Two-year old Kang Kang weighs about 50 killogrammes (110 pounds). They had arrived in Tokyo a week earlier, but had spent that time becoming accustomed to their surroundings, while their Chinese keepers were instructing their Japanese counterparts in the care and feeding of the bears.
